Online Business College Courses - Which College Should You Choose?

Perhaps you are considering going back to school and have decided to get a business degree? Not a bad idea actually, but now you have to choose which college to attend. You realize that you are not young like you use to be and you cannot just get up and move to a school that is 1,000s of miles away and live in a dorm or dump your entire life and move. So, you have considered getting your degree online, good choice and you are not alone. Enrollment online is up by 500% in the past 3-years.

Okay, so, now that you have decided to take online classes rather than actual classes you need to determine which college to attend? There is quite a difference between online college courses. And if you want to save costs you need to consider the price per unit. You will also want your college credits to be transferable and from a respected college or university. This means it probably will not be cheap.

For a top notched university you could be paying $1,000 to $1,800 per unit, no kidding. But if you shop around you might be able to find a quality online course that only charges $800 per unit and your degree will come with a top named school on it. This is of serious value to your resume once you complete all the courses. Best of all you can attend an East Coast school even if you live in let's say California.

Online business courses are not for everyone, but they are certainly great for the working adult or for someone, which has been out of school for years and wishes to go back and get that degree. Best of all most of these courses allow you to work at your own pace, which is another big plus indeed. Please consider all this.

BEST BUSINESS SCHOOL ONLINE

E-learning will enable you to enhance your skills even if you can’t travel to an offsite training facility or if you have a hectic work schedule. It also provides an economical way to grow professionally—to practice lifelong learning—since e-learning is usually less expensive than off-site training, including travel costs.

Roger Schank, professor emeritus and founder of the Institute for Learning Sciences at Northwestern University and one of the world’s top researchers of artificial intelligence, learning theory and cognitive science, has been appointed Chief Learning Officer. As CLO, Schank will oversee the design and implementation of the e-learning curriculum. Schank, who has also taught at Yale University among other top institutions and is author of some 25 books, is a pioneer and innovator in applying the Learning by Doing philosophy to online education. “People know that they learn by doing precisely because they know that they can learn nothing of value without constant practice” said Schank.

Top Business Schools for Undergraduates

If you're interested in studying business, check out these top business schools first. Each has impressive facilities, professors, and name recognition. I've listed the schools alphabetically to avoid the arbitrary distinctions often used to decide who should be number 7 or 8 in a top ten list. That said, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania consistently claims the top spot in national rankings.

Cornell University

Cornell University's Satler HotelCornell010 / Wikimedia Commons
Even though it doesn't have a separate undergraduate school of business like most of the schools on this list do, Cornell University frequently places high on rankings of undergraduate business programs. Both the School of Hotel Management and the School of Industrial and Labor Relations offer excellent undergradute degree programs. Prospective students need to designate which school they are applying to on their applications. The School of Industrial and Labor Relations is a state-funded unit at Cornell and consequently has lower tuition. Hotel Management, however, is generally thought to be the best program of its type in the country.

Cornell is part of the Ivy League, and it frequently ranks among the top universities in the country.

Emory University - Goizueta School of Business

Emory's Goizueta School of Businessyanec / Flickr
The Goizueta School of Business gets its name from Roberto Goizueta, former president of the Coca-Cola Company. The school is on Emory's main campus in the metropolitan Atlanta area. This highly-ranked school offers its students exchange opportunities with the Cass School of Business in London. The Goizueta curriculum builds upon a two-year liberal arts and sciences foundation. Students, both transfers and from within Emory, can apply only when they have attained junior standing. A minimum of a B+ average in pre-business courses is required for admission.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Sloan School of Management

MIT Tang CenterMBAstudent / Wikimedia Commons
The Sloan School of Management, located on the Charles River in Cambridge, frequently finds itself on top-ten lists of undergraduate business schools. The Sloan School offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, and undergraduates can often take classes with graduate students. There is no separate admissions process for the Sloan School -- students who have been accepted to MIT simply declare Management Science as their major at the end of freshman year. Beginning in 2008, MIT will also offer a new minor in Management Science. The mathematically-challenged should think twice before considering Sloan -- the school has an unusually strong emphasis on quantitative analysis.

New York University - Stern School of Business

NYU Stern School of Businesspundit / Wikimedia Commons
Located in Greenwich Village in Manhattan, New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business is a great choice for the ambitious student who wants a top program in a bustling urban environment. The Stern School of Business is highly competitive with a significantly lower rate of acceptance than NYU as a whole. Unlike some other undergraduate business programs, the Stern School is a four-year curriculum -- students must indicate their interest in business on their initial application to NYU.

UC Berkeley - Haas School of Business

UC Berkeley Haas School of Businessyanec / Flickr
Berkeley's Walter A. Haas School of Business, like the other public schools on this list, offers a top-quality undergraduate business program at a bargain price. Haas has a two-year curriculum, and students must apply to the school from within Berkeley. In 2007 - 08, a little over half of the Berkeley students who applied to Haas were offered admission. On average, accepted students had an undergraduate GPA of 3.67. The Haas School is located on Berkeley's main campus in Berkeley, California.

University of Michigan - Ross School of Business

University of Michigan Towerjeffwilcox / Flickr
The Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan frequently places in the top half of top-ten rakings of U.S. business schools. The school's success has led to the building of a new 270,000 square foot home for Ross. The Ross School has a three-year curriculum, so most students apply during their first year at Michigan. On average, accepted students for the fall of 2007 had a GPA of 3.65. Exceptional high school students can apply to Haas through the "preferred admission" process. If accepted, these students are guaranteed a place in the Ross School of Business if they fulfill certain requirements during their first year of college. Only 19% of preferred admission applicants were accepted for the fall of 2007.

UNC Chapel Hill - Kenan-Flagler Business School

UNC Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business SchoolDP08 / Wikimedia Commons
The Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina has the lowest price tag of all the schools on this list. Since 1997 the school has occupied an impressive 191,000 square foot building on the Chapel Hill campus. Students apply to Kenan-Flagler after their first year at UNC Chapel Hill, and transfer students must apply to UNC first. For the class of 2009, 331 applicants were admitted and 159 were denied. The average GPA of admitted students was a 3.5.

University of Pennsylvania - Wharton School

University of Pennsylvania Wharton SchoolJack Duval / Flickr
The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania almost always ranks as the top undergraduate business school in the country, if not the world. The school's website claims the faculty are the most published and cited business school faculty in the world, and Wharton boasts an impressive 8 to 1 student / faculty ratio. The undergraduate program typically receives about 5,500 applications a year of which about 650 are admitted. The school is a four-year program, so students apply directly from high school. Median starting salaries for Wharton graduates are second only to MIT's Sloan School of Business.

University of Texas at Austin - McCombs School of Business

UT Austin McCombs School of BusinessZereshk / Wikipedia Commons
McCombs is yet another excellent business school at a state university, and its undergraduate program nearly always wins high marks in national rankings. The accounting major is particularly strong. Most McCombs students apply straight from high school, and the admissions standards are higher than for UT Austin as a whole. For the class entering in 2007, 6,209 applicants applied and only 1,251 were admitted. Students can transfer to McCombs from another college at UT Austin, but the odds of getting in are low. Also, because the school is state supported, most spaces are reserved for Texas residents. The admissions bar is thus even higher for out-of-state applicants.

University of Virginia - McIntire School of Commerce

University of Virginiarpongsaj / flickr
In 2008, Business Week ranked McIntire just below Penn's Wharton School, and the in-state tuition is 1/4 the cost of Penn. The school recently moved to state-of-the-art Rouss Hall on UVA's beautiful Charlottesville campus in Jeffersonian Virginia. McIntire's undergraduate curriculum requires two years, so students typically apply in the spring of their second year at University of Virginia. The 2007 entering class had an average GPA of 3.49. McIntire also accepts transfer students from outside of UVA if they have the requisite course work and qualifications.

harvard business school In today's competitive job market, those wishing to secure the best jobs in the global economy's best companies need the added advantage of having a degree in business management.

Fortunately, there are many fine business schools located throughout the United States designed to prepare students to plan, organize, direct, and control the functions of top firms and organizations. With a business degree in hand, the company—as well as the individual—can be confident that a prepared and well-trained person is running their organization.

Students who attend a business management school can major in areas like international business, management, marketing, or operations. In the end, they often come away from the program with skills such as management of financial resources, management of personnel resources, negotiation, management of material resources, and monitoring.

Students of business management generally learn about economics, how business operates in both legal and social environments, and methods for measuring and predicting business activity. Students of business management programs have many options ahead of them upon graduation. While some get jobs in the business world directly following graduation, others apply to and enter into graduate programs. Liberal arts majors sometimes get an entry-level job in the business world and then apply to graduate business programs once they have a little experience under their belts.

In general, those who complete business management programs have access to high-paying jobs. At the top of the list, chief executives and private sector executives make the most money, on average just less than $150,000 per year. Cost estimators make the least, on average $50,000, while general and operations managers weigh in at the middle at about $80,000 per year. Other jobs that business school graduates take after graduation include administrative services managers, postsecondary business teachers, construction managers, industrial production managers, management analysts, and sales managers.

« IE to invest around ?14 million in the restoration of the former Convent of Santa Cruz la Real | Home | IE Professors Talk - David Allen »

At IE Business School we have developed in recent years a strong capacity in the development and delivery from online programs due to the growing demand from both candidates as well as corporations.

As you certainly screened the market, you have seen a wide range of online MBA programs. Some of them are delivered in the often-believed only possible “download-print-out and study on your own” format. These kind of programs seldom involve interaction with both classmates and professors and you might get together just only for the exam period. This category of online programs falls under the Internet scheme - less intermediaries, less interaction with people and therefore cheaper.

When IE started to research and develop its own online methodology in 2001 the only premise was “How can we transform the physical classroom with the continuous and enriching interaction between students and professors into a virtual classroom maintaining the case study method maintaining the same or even higher level of quality?”
And with what we came up with, was an online platform with forums and private rooms (plus many other features) where students can discuss exactly the same cases as in the face to face programs. Team discussions are made in 2-3 days without any intervention from the professors and class discussions are done in another 2-3 days. So, a normal session in an online program last about one week instead of 90 minutes in a face-to-face program. Therefore, the dedication of the professor is higher than in traditional programs, being this a critical cost driver in online programs. The faculty we use for our online programs is the same as in the face-to-face programs, so they are teaching both methodologies. Additionally, class sizes are also reduced to about 30 students per class. So, the exposure of students to the professor is more relevant at the same time providing students in that way a higher interaction opportunity with an increased learning outcome.

To sum up, top quality online education follows the same price standards as the traditional methodology since there is no concession of quality. You can be sure of the same selection criteria and standards during the admissions process, you can expect the same student profile, you will have the same faculty as in the face-to-face program and, of course, we use the same cases for the class discussion.
